Chuck Schumer

Chuck Schumer is a member of the Democratic Party and has served as a U.S. Senator from New York since 1999. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he graduated from Harvard College in 1971 and Harvard Law School in 1974. His political career began in the New York State Assembly, where he served from 1975 to 1980. He was first elected to the U.S. Congress in 1980, representing New York's 9th District in the House of Representatives from 1981 to 1999. In 1998, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he has since risen to the position of Senate Majority Leader, a role he has held since 2021. Throughout his tenure in Congress, Schumer has been a central figure in authoring and passing major legislation. During his time in the House, he sponsored the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act (1993) and the Violence Against Women Act (1994). He is also known for creating the "Schumer Box," a standardized disclosure format for credit card terms. In the Senate, he played a key role in the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act, which addressed climate change, domestic manufacturing, and healthcare costs.

Schumer's policy positions generally align with the platform of the Democratic Party. On healthcare, he supports the Affordable Care Act and has championed legislation to empower Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices. In the economic sphere, he advocates for infrastructure investment, domestic manufacturing, and middle-class tax credits.
