Brian Mast

Brian Mast is a Republican U.S. Representative who has served Florida's 21st Congressional District since 2023, following his tenure representing the 18th District from 2017 to 2023. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2016. Before his political career, Mast served twelve years in the United States Army as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician. In 2010, while deployed in Afghanistan, he was severely injured by an improvised explosive device, resulting in the loss of both legs and an index finger. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his service. After being medically retired from the Army, Mast worked as an explosives specialist for the Department of Homeland Security and served as an analyst for the National Nuclear Security Administration. He earned a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree from Harvard University's Extension School in 2016. In Congress, he has been a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. His legislative work often centers on veterans' affairs and environmental issues specific to Florida's coastal ecosystems.

Mast's policy positions generally align with conservative principles, with a specific focus on environmental conservation and national security. He is a prominent advocate for Florida's water quality, supporting projects like the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan and legislation to mitigate toxic algal blooms from Lake Okeechobee. On economic issues, he supports lower taxes and reduced federal spending, having voted for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. His healthcare platform includes the repeal of the Affordable Care Act in favor of market-based alternatives. On immigration, he emphasizes border security and the enforcement of existing laws while suggesting reforms to the legal immigration process. In foreign policy, Mast is a vocal supporter of Israel and has advocated for a robust military to maintain national security. While he generally supports the Second Amendment, he has at times supported specific regulations, such as banning bump stocks and implementing certain age-based restrictions on firearm purchases.
