Richard Durbin

Richard Durbin, a member of the Democratic Party, is the senior U.S. Senator from Illinois, a position he has held since 1997. Born in East St. Louis, Illinois, he earned a B.S. from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in 1966 and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1969. Before his time in Congress, Durbin served as legal counsel to Lieutenant Governor Paul Simon and the Illinois State Senate Judiciary Committee. He also maintained a private law practice and taught at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Durbin's congressional career began in 1982 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Illinois's 20th district. After serving seven terms in the House, he won election to the U.S. Senate in 1996. Throughout his tenure, he has held significant leadership roles, most notably serving as the Senate Democratic Whip since 2005, making him the longest-serving whip in the position's history. He also chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee during the 117th and 118th Congresses. His legislative accomplishments include a successful 1988 ban on smoking on commercial airline flights and a long-standing advocacy for Illinois farmers, particularly through the promotion of ethanol. He has been a primary champion of the DREAM Act, which aims to provide a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. In April 2025, Durbin announced he would not seek re-election in 2026, concluding more than 40 years of service in federal office.

Durbin's policy positions generally align with the Democratic platform, emphasizing social safety nets and civil rights. He is a strong supporter of the Affordable Care Act and has advocated for universal healthcare coverage. On the economy, he has focused on protecting Social Security and Medicare, frequently calling for bipartisan action to ensure their long-term solvency.
