Jeff Merkley

Jeff Merkley is a Democratic politician serving as the junior U.S. Senator from Oregon, a position he has held since 2009. Born in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, he was the first in his family to attend college, earning a bachelor's degree in international relations from Stanford University in 1979 and a Master of Public Affairs from Princeton University in 1982. Prior to his career in elective office, Merkley worked as a national security analyst at the Pentagon and the Congressional Budget Office, and later served as the executive director of Portland's Habitat for Humanity and as president of the World Affairs Council of Oregon. He began his legislative career in the Oregon House of Representatives, where he served from 1999 to 2009. During his final two years in the state legislature, he served as Speaker of the House, where he oversaw the passage of landmark environmental, education, and civil rights legislation. Merkley was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2008, unseating incumbent Gordon Smith. Since joining Congress, he has become a leading progressive voice, particularly known for his advocacy for Senate procedural reform and his work on the Senate Committees on Appropriations, Foreign Relations, and Environment and Public Works.
