John Reed

John Francis "Jack" Reed is the senior U.S. Senator from Rhode Island and a member of the Democratic Party. Born in Providence and raised in Cranston, Rhode Island, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1971. He served as an active-duty officer in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division, attaining the rank of captain, and later retired from the Army Reserve as a major. Reed furthered his education at Harvard University, earning a Master of Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government in 1973 and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1982. Reed's legislative career began in the Rhode Island State Senate, where he served from 1985 to 1991. He was first elected to the U.S. Congress in 1990, serving three terms in the House of Representatives representing Rhode Island's 2nd district. In 1996, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, succeeding longtime Senator Claiborne Pell, and took office in 1997. Throughout his tenure, Reed has held significant leadership roles, notably serving as the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. His legislative accomplishments include helping to create the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Office of Financial Research, as well as his advocacy for the federal Pell Grant program and modernizing national defense strategies.

Senator Reed consistently supports policies aligned with the Democratic platform. In healthcare, he advocates for the Affordable Care Act and has worked to expand access to mental health services and community health centers. His economic stated positions focus on consumer protection, job creation through infrastructure investment, and fiscal responsibility. Regarding immigration, Reed supports comprehensive reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, particularly "Dreamers," alongside enhanced border security measures. He is a strong proponent of environmental protections, advocating for clean energy development and federal action to address climate change. In foreign policy and defense, he emphasizes military modernization, oversight of defense spending, and addressing global security challenges such as the strategic competition with China. Additionally, he supports abortion rights, gun safety legislation, and increased federal funding for public education and libraries.
