Bill Hagerty

William Francis "Bill" Hagerty IV is the junior United States Senator from Tennessee and a member of the Republican Party. He was first elected to the Senate in 2020 and assumed office on January 3, 2021. Born on August 14, 1959, in Gallatin, Tennessee, Hagerty earned his Bachelor of Arts in economics and business administration from Vanderbilt University in 1981, followed by a Juris Doctor from Vanderbilt Law School in 1984. Hagerty's professional background includes experience in management consulting and private equity. He began his career at the Boston Consulting Group and later served as a White House Fellow under President George H.W. Bush, focusing on international trade and commerce. He was a co-founder of the investment firm Hagerty Peterson & Company. His public service career prior to Congress includes serving as the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development from 2011 to 2015, where he worked on economic expansion projects, and serving as the 30th U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 2017 to 2019. In the Senate, Hagerty serves on committees including Appropriations, Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, and Foreign Relations. His accomplishments include the negotiation of significant trade agreements during his tenure as an ambassador and advocating for economic development in Tennessee. Throughout his career, he has been involved in several presidential campaigns, including serving as a national finance chairman for Mitt Romney in 2008 and leading the appointments team for the 2016 Trump transition.
