Jon Ossoff

Thomas Jonathan Ossoff is an American politician and investigative journalist serving as the senior U.S. Senator from Georgia. A member of the Democratic Party, he was first elected to the Senate in a runoff election on January 5, 2021, and was sworn in on January 20, 2021. He is the first millennial and the first Jewish senator to represent Georgia in the U.S. Senate. Raised in Atlanta, he was mentored by civil rights icon John Lewis before embarking on his career in journalism and public service. Ossoff attended Georgetown University, where he received a Bachelor of Science from the Walsh School of Foreign Service, and later earned a Master of Science in international political economy from the London School of Economics. Prior to his election, he worked as a legislative assistant for Representative Hank Johnson and served for several years as the CEO of Insight TWI, an investigative documentary firm that exposed corruption, war crimes, and human trafficking globally. In the Senate, Ossoff serves on the Judiciary and Homeland Security committees and chairs the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. In this role, he has led high-profile inquiries into the treatment of foster children, human rights abuses in federal prisons, and the quality of privatized military housing. His legislative accomplishments include championing the Solar Energy Manufacturing for America Act and securing significant federal investments for Georgia's infrastructure and port facilities.

Senator Ossoff supports strengthening the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and advocates for a public health insurance option to increase coverage and lower costs. He has voted for measures to cap insulin prices at $35 per month and supports allowing Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices. On environmental policy, he emphasizes the transition to clean energy through federal incentives for domestic manufacturing, particularly in the solar industry, though he has not endorsed the Green New Deal resolution. Ossoff's economic platform includes raising the federal minimum wage, providing tax relief for working families, and investing in regional infrastructure to support small business growth. He has also introduced bipartisan legislation to ban members of Congress and their spouses from trading stocks. Regarding immigration, Ossoff favors comprehensive reform that combines enhanced border security and technology with a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. He is a co-sponsor of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and supports federal police reform to improve transparency and accountability.
