Richard Blumenthal

Richard Blumenthal is the senior United States Senator from Connecticut and a member of the Democratic Party. He was first elected to the Senate in 2010 and has since been re-elected twice. Before his tenure in Congress, Blumenthal served an unprecedented five terms as Connecticut's Attorney General from 1991 to 2011, where he gained national prominence for his role in lawsuits against the tobacco industry and Microsoft. His early career includes serving as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut from 1977 to 1981 and holding seats in both chambers of the Connecticut General Assembly. Blumenthal's academic background includes a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a J.D. from Yale Law School, where he was the editor-in-chief of the Yale Law Journal. Following law school, he clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun. He also served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1970 to 1976, attaining the rank of sergeant. During his time in the Senate, he has been a prominent member of several committees, including Judiciary, Armed Services, and Veterans' Affairs, focusing on consumer protection, veterans' rights, and judicial oversight. One of his significant legislative achievements is the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans (SAV) Act, which aimed to improve mental health care services for veterans.
