John Boozman

John Nichols Boozman was born on December 10, 1950, in Shreveport, Louisiana, and raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He attended the University of Arkansas, where he played football for the Razorbacks, before earning his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern College of Optometry in 1977. Following graduation, Boozman co-founded a private optometry clinic and operated a cattle ranch in Rogers, Arkansas. His early public service included serving on the Rogers School Board from 1994 to 2001. A member of the Republican Party, Boozman was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in a 2001 special election to represent Arkansas's 3rd congressional district. He served in the House for nearly a decade, during which time he was an assistant Republican whip and chaired the Veterans' Affairs Economic Opportunity Subcommittee. In 2010, Boozman was elected to the U.S. Senate, defeating the incumbent Democrat to become the senior senator from Arkansas. Throughout his tenure, Boozman has held significant leadership roles, including serving as the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry. He is recognized for his work on veterans' issues, notably authoring legislation to modernize the GI Bill and expand services for women veterans. Additionally, he has focused on infrastructure development for Arkansas's waterways and ports and has been a prominent advocate for the state's agricultural industry.
