Jerry Moran

Jerry Moran is a Republican U.S. Senator from Kansas, first elected to the Senate in 2010 after serving seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Born in Great Bend and raised in Plainville, Kansas, Moran earned his bachelor's degree in economics and a Juris Doctor from the University of Kansas. Before entering elective office, he worked as a small-town banker and an attorney, serving as a state special assistant attorney general and deputy attorney for Rooks County. Moran's legislative career began in the Kansas State Senate, where he served from 1989 to 1997, including two years as Majority Leader. In 1996, he was elected to represent Kansas’s 1st congressional district in the U.S. House. In the U.S. Senate, he has held significant leadership roles, including serving as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee during the 2014 election cycle, when Republicans gained a nine-seat majority. He is currently the dean of the Kansas congressional delegation and has served as the chair or ranking member of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee. Throughout his tenure, Moran has focused on issues impacting rural America, such as agricultural policy and rural healthcare infrastructure. He is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, where he influences funding for agencies like NASA, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Agriculture. Additionally, he has been an advocate for veterans' services and technological innovation, co-founding several caucuses related to community pharmacy, hunger, and aerospace.

Senator Moran maintains a conservative platform emphasizing fiscal responsibility and rural advocacy. He is a vocal critic of federal spending, consistently opposing tax increases and supporting a constitutional amendment for a balanced budget. On healthcare, he opposed the Affordable Care Act and focuses on preserving access to quality care in rural communities through telehealth and medical research. Moran supports increasing domestic energy production, including traditional oil and gas as well as biofuels like ethanol, while opposing stringent EPA emissions regulations. In foreign policy, he advocates for maintaining pressure on adversaries like Russia and Iran through sanctions and has supported bipartisan measures to ensure U.S. commitment to NATO. His social positions are traditionally conservative; he is pro-life, opposes same-sex marriage, and is a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights.
