Lisa Murkowski

Lisa Murkowski is the senior U.S. Senator from Alaska, a position she has held since 2002. A member of the Republican Party, she was born in Ketchikan, Alaska, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Georgetown University in 1980 followed by a Juris Doctor from Willamette University College of Law in 1985. Before her tenure in federal office, she worked as an attorney in private practice and served in the Alaska House of Representatives from 1999 to 2002, eventually rising to the role of House Majority Leader. Murkowski was first appointed to the U.S. Senate by her father, then-Governor Frank Murkowski, to fill his vacated seat and was subsequently elected to a full term in 2004. Throughout her Senate career, Murkowski has established a reputation as a centrist and a key swing vote on high-profile legislation. She gained national prominence in 2010 when she became the first U.S. Senator in over 50 years to win re-election as a write-in candidate after losing her party's primary. She has held significant leadership roles, including serving as the Chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and the Vice Chair of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. Her work frequently focuses on issues critical to Alaska, such as maritime policy, indigenous rights, and the development of the state’s natural resources.

Senator Murkowski's policy positions often blend traditional Republican fiscal principles with centrist views on social and environmental issues. On energy and the environment, she is a strong advocate for domestic energy production, including drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), while simultaneously supporting renewable energy investments and acknowledging the impacts of climate change on the Arctic. Regarding healthcare, she has frequently broken with her party to protect the Affordable Care Act's provisions for pre-existing conditions and was a decisive vote against its full repeal in 2017. She also supports federal funding for Planned Parenthood and identifies as pro-choice. On economic matters, Murkowski is a proponent of fiscal restraint and tax reform but was a lead negotiator and supporter of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Her immigration stance includes support for comprehensive reform and a pathway to legal status for DACA recipients, and she has opposed using national emergency declarations to fund border wall construction. In foreign policy, she maintains a traditional internationalist approach, advocating for strong NATO alliances and providing military aid to Ukraine.
