Patty Murray

Patty Murray, a member of the Democratic Party, has served as a United States Senator from Washington since 1993. Raised in Bothell, Washington, she graduated from Washington State University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in physical education. Murray began her career as a preschool teacher and became politically active as a grassroots advocate for education and environmental issues. She served on the Shoreline School Board and in the Washington State Senate before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992, running as "a mom in tennis shoes" during a historic year for female representation in Congress. Throughout her tenure, Murray has become one of the most senior members of the Senate, holding significant leadership roles including Chair of the Appropriations Committee and President pro tempore of the Senate. She was the first woman to chair both the Senate Veterans' Affairs and Budget Committees. Murray is recognized for negotiating the 2013 Bipartisan Budget Act and for her legislative work on the Violence Against Women Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act. Her career has consistently focused on expanding access to healthcare, education, and social safety nets, influenced by her personal background as the daughter of a disabled veteran.
