Tim Scott

Timothy Eugene Scott is a Republican U.S. Senator from South Carolina, a seat he has held since 2013. Born on September 19, 1965, in North Charleston, Scott was raised by a single mother in a working-class household. He attended Presbyterian College on a football scholarship and later graduated from Charleston Southern University with a Bachelor of Science in political science in 1988. Prior to his career in public service, Scott was a small business owner, operating an Allstate insurance agency and working as a financial adviser. Scott began his political career on the Charleston County Council, where he served from 1995 to 2009. He was then elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2008 and served one term before winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010. Representing South Carolina’s 1st congressional district, he became the first Black Republican from the South elected to the House since Reconstruction. In 2013, he was appointed to the U.S. Senate by Governor Nikki Haley following the resignation of Jim DeMint. In the Senate, Scott has won three successive elections: a 2014 special election, a 2016 full term, and a 2022 re-election. He is notable as the first African American from the Southern United States to serve in both chambers of Congress since the Reconstruction era. His legislative work often focuses on 'Opportunity Zones,' a provision he championed in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to encourage investment in distressed areas. In 2023, he sought the Republican nomination for President of the United States before suspending his campaign in November of that year.
