Peter Welch

Peter Welch is a Democratic politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Vermont since 2023. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on May 2, 1947, he graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1969 and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1973. Welch began his career as a public defender in Vermont and later founded a law firm in White River Junction. His political career began in the Vermont State Senate, where he served from 1981 to 1989 and again from 2003 to 2007, notably becoming the first Democrat in Vermont history to serve as the chamber's President Pro Tempore. Welch was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006, representing Vermont's at-large district for sixteen years. During his tenure in the House, he served as a Chief Deputy Whip and was a member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce and the Committee on Oversight and Reform. He focused on issues such as rural development, healthcare affordability, and environmental protection. In 2022, he was elected to the U.S. Senate to succeed the retiring Patrick Leahy. In the Senate, he serves on the Agriculture, Judiciary, and Commerce committees, continuing his work on climate change, infrastructure, and democratic governance.

Senator Welch's stated positions are generally aligned with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. On healthcare, he supports a transition toward universal coverage, expanding Medicare's ability to negotiate prescription drug prices, and codifying reproductive rights at the federal level. Regarding the environment, he is an advocate for the Green New Deal and has supported major climate legislation, including the Inflation Reduction Act, to promote renewable energy and efficiency. His economic platform includes raising the federal minimum wage to $17 per hour, increasing tax rates for corporations and high-income earners, and strengthening collective bargaining rights for workers. In foreign policy, Welch supports a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, emphasizes the importance of multilateral diplomacy, and has been a critic of unilateral military engagements.
