Ron Wyden

Ron Wyden is a Democrat serving as the senior U.S. Senator from Oregon. Born in Wichita, Kansas, to Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany, he grew up in Palo Alto, California, and attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, on a basketball scholarship before transferring to Stanford University. He earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Stanford in 1971 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1974. Before entering elective office, Wyden was a prominent advocate for the elderly, co-founding the Oregon chapter of the Gray Panthers and serving as director of Oregon Legal Services for the Elderly from 1977 to 1979. Wyden began his congressional career in 1980 when he was elected to represent Oregon's 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, a seat he held from 1981 to 1996. In January 1996, he won a special election to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy left by Bob Packwood, becoming Oregon's first new senator in over 30 years. He has since been re-elected five times. As of 2026, he serves as the Chair of the Senate Finance Committee and is a senior member of the Committees on Energy and Natural Resources, Budget, and the Select Committee on Intelligence. Throughout his tenure, Wyden has been known for his work on technology, healthcare, and environmental issues. He co-authored Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which provides a legal framework for internet content moderation, and the Internet Tax Freedom Act. In recent years, he played a central role in passing provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act that allow Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices. He has also successfully championed the designation of hundreds of thousands of acres of Oregon wilderness and nearly 2,000 miles of Wild and Scenic rivers.

Senator Wyden's policy positions emphasize healthcare accessibility, middle-class economic security, and digital privacy. In healthcare, he views access as a right and focuses on expanding Medicare and Medicaid, lowering out-of-pocket costs, and protecting reproductive rights. Regarding immigration, he supports accountability for enforcement agencies and emphasizes due process for vulnerable populations, including unaccompanied migrant children.
