John Kennedy

John Neely Kennedy is a Republican U.S. Senator from Louisiana, first elected in 2016 and assuming office on January 3, 2017. Born on November 21, 1951, in Centreville, Mississippi, he was raised in Zachary, Louisiana. He graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University in 1973 with a degree in political science, philosophy, and economics. He later earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1977 and a Bachelor of Civil Law with first-class honors from the University of Oxford in 1979. Before entering the Senate, Kennedy had a long career in Louisiana state government. He served as special counsel and Secretary of the Cabinet to Governor Buddy Roemer from 1988 to 1992 and was appointed Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Revenue in 1996. He was then elected to five terms as Louisiana State Treasurer, serving from 2000 to 2017. Although he began his political career as a Democrat, he switched his affiliation to the Republican Party in 2007. In the U.S. Senate, Kennedy serves on several committees, including Appropriations, Banking, Budget, and Judiciary. He has focused on fiscal discipline, disaster relief, and flood insurance, while becoming known for his direct communication style during legislative hearings.
