Katie Britt

Katie Britt is a Republican politician and attorney serving as the junior United States Senator from Alabama since January 2023. She is the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Alabama and, at the time of her election, was the youngest Republican woman ever elected to the chamber. Born in Enterprise, Alabama, Britt earned a Bachelor of Science in political science and a Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama. Britt’s professional career includes serving as the Chief of Staff for Senator Richard Shelby from 2016 to 2018 and as the President and CEO of the Business Council of Alabama from 2018 to 2021. She also worked in private legal practice at firms in Birmingham. In the 2022 election, she defeated Mo Brooks in the Republican primary runoff and subsequently won the general election to succeed the retiring Senator Shelby. In the Senate, Britt has held assignments on the Committees on Appropriations; Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; and Rules and Administration. She delivered the Republican response to the State of the Union address in 2024. Her legislative record includes the passage of the Laken Riley Act in 2025, which she authored to strengthen immigration enforcement. She is also recognized for her advocacy regarding rural economic development and mental health resources for youth.

Senator Britt maintains conservative positions on major policy issues, prioritizing fiscal responsibility, border security, and energy independence. She supports tax cuts and deregulation to stimulate economic growth while advocating for reduced federal spending to combat inflation. On immigration, she is a vocal proponent of stricter enforcement and the completion of the border wall, notably authoring legislation to mandate the detention of certain undocumented immigrants who commit crimes. Britt favors the expansion of domestic oil and gas production to lower energy costs and opposes federal environmental mandates she views as overreaching. In healthcare, she focuses on increasing market transparency and competition to reduce consumer costs, and she has stated a commitment to protecting individuals with pre-existing conditions. She holds pro-life views and is a defender of Second Amendment rights.
