Eric Schmitt

Eric Schmitt is a Republican politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Missouri since January 2023. Born in Bridgeton, Missouri, he earned a B.A. from Truman State University and a J.D. from Saint Louis University School of Law, where he edited the Law Review. He began his career in private legal practice and served as an alderman for Glendale, Missouri, from 2005 to 2008. Schmitt was later elected to the Missouri Senate, representing the 15th district from 2009 to 2017, where he focused on fiscal policy and authored significant tax cuts. In 2016, Schmitt was elected Missouri State Treasurer, launching the MO ABLE program for individuals with disabilities. He was appointed Missouri Attorney General in 2019 and subsequently elected to a full term in 2020. During his tenure as Attorney General, he initiated the Safer Streets Initiative and the SAFE Kit Initiative while also filing numerous lawsuits against the federal government regarding COVID-19 mandates and environmental regulations. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022, succeeding retiring Senator Roy Blunt.

Schmitt maintains a platform focused on fiscal conservatism, advocating for federal spending reductions and domestic energy production to combat inflation. On healthcare, he supports the repeal of the Affordable Care Act and has consistently opposed government-mandated health measures, such as mask and vaccine requirements. His immigration stance emphasizes strict border security, the completion of the U.S.-Mexico border wall, and support for large-scale deportation operations; he has also expressed skepticism toward legal immigration programs like the H-1B visa. Schmitt’s environmental policy prioritizes deregulation and American energy independence through fossil fuel expansion. In foreign policy, he aligns with an "America First" approach, emphasizing national sovereignty and a realist military strategy.
