Amy Klobuchar

Amy Jean Klobuchar was born on May 25, 1960, in Plymouth, Minnesota, to Rose and Jim Klobuchar. She graduated as valedictorian from Wayzata High School and attended Yale University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science magna cum laude in 1982. She then obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago Law School in 1985. Following law school, she worked as a corporate attorney at the law firms Dorsey & Whitney and Gray Plant Mooty, specializing in telecommunications law. In 1998, Klobuchar was elected Hennepin County Attorney, serving as the chief prosecutor for Minnesota's most populous county for two terms before seeking national office. Klobuchar is a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party, the state affiliate of the Democratic Party. She was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006, making history as the first woman elected to represent Minnesota in that body. She has since been re-elected three times, in 2012, 2018, and 2024. Throughout her Senate career, she has built a reputation for bipartisanship and legislative productivity, frequently ranking among the top senators for the number of bills she sponsors that are signed into law. Her key accomplishments include securing federal funding for the reconstruction of the I-35W bridge, leading efforts to combat human trafficking and the opioid epidemic, and authoring significant legislation on consumer safety and veterans' affairs. She currently chairs the Senate Rules Committee and holds senior roles on the Judiciary and Agriculture committees.
