Sheldon Whitehouse

Sheldon Whitehouse is a Democratic U.S. Senator from Rhode Island, first elected in 2006 and assuming office in 2007. Born in New York City and raised in a Foreign Service family, he lived in several countries including Vietnam and South Africa before returning to the U.S. for his education. He graduated from Yale University in 1978 with a degree in architecture and earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1982. Following law school, he clerked for the Supreme Court of West Virginia and later served in various roles in Rhode Island state government. Prior to his Senate career, Whitehouse held significant legal and administrative positions. He served as the Director of the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation before being appointed as the U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island by President Bill Clinton in 1994. In 1998, he was elected as Rhode Island’s Attorney General, serving from 1999 to 2003. During his tenure in law enforcement, he focused on prosecuting organized crime and public corruption. In the Senate, Whitehouse has become known for his extensive work on environmental policy and judicial reform. He authored the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) to combat the opioid crisis and has been a leader in bipartisan efforts to address marine plastic pollution and rebuild national infrastructure. He serves as the Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and is a senior member of the Judiciary, Finance, and Environment and Public Works Committees.
