John Barrasso

John Barrasso, a member of the Republican Party, has served as a U.S. Senator from Wyoming since 2007. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, he earned his Bachelor of Science and medical degree from Georgetown University before completing his residency at Yale Medical School. Before entering politics, Barrasso spent over 20 years as a board-certified orthopedic surgeon in private practice in Casper, Wyoming. He also served as the president of the Wyoming Medical Society and as chief of staff at the Wyoming Medical Center. Barrasso's political career began in the Wyoming State Senate, where he served from 2003 until 2007. In June 2007, he was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy created by the death of Senator Craig Thomas. He subsequently won a special election in 2008 and was re-elected to full terms in 2012, 2018, and 2024. Within the Senate, he has held significant leadership roles, including serving as chairman of the Senate Republican Conference and the Senate Republican Policy Committee, and was elected Senate Majority Whip for the 119th Congress.

Senator Barrasso is a conservative lawmaker who emphasizes fiscal responsibility, domestic energy production, and limited federal government intervention. On healthcare, he supports market-based reforms, telemedicine expansion, and tort reform while opposing the Affordable Care Act. As a representative of a top energy-producing state, he is a vocal advocate for the coal, oil, and natural gas industries, frequently criticizing what he describes as regulatory overreach by the Environmental Protection Agency. On fiscal matters, he supports permanent tax cuts, a balanced budget amendment, and reduced federal spending. Regarding immigration, Barrasso emphasizes border security, including finishing the border wall and opposing taxpayer-funded benefits or driver's licenses for illegal immigrants. On social issues, he has consistently maintained pro-life positions and opposed same-sex marriage. In foreign policy, he adheres to a 'peace through strength' doctrine, supporting strong military defense and maintaining a close alliance with Israel.
