Kirsten Gillibrand

Kirsten Gillibrand is a U.S. Senator from New York and a member of the Democratic Party. Born in Albany, New York, she graduated from Dartmouth College in 1988 with a degree in Asian Studies and earned her Juris Doctor from the UCLA School of Law in 1991. Before her career in public office, she served as a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, worked in private legal practice, and served as Special Counsel to the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development during the Clinton administration. Gillibrand was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006, representing New York's 20th District, where she served until 2009. In January 2009, she was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the seat vacated by Hillary Clinton. She subsequently won a special election in 2010 and was re-elected to full terms in 2012, 2018, and 2024. Throughout her tenure, she has been a lead advocate for the repeal of the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy, the passage of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, and significant reforms to the military justice system regarding the prosecution of sexual assault.

Senator Gillibrand supports a universal healthcare system and has co-sponsored 'Medicare for All' legislation. Her economic platform includes advocacy for a national paid family leave program, increases to the federal minimum wage, and the expansion of tax credits for small businesses. On environmental policy, she supports carbon emission limits through cap-and-trade systems and has proposed banning new oil and gas drilling on federal lands. Regarding immigration, she advocates for comprehensive reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and has called for the restructuring of federal immigration enforcement. She is a supporter of reproductive rights and has consistently voted to protect access to abortion and contraception. In foreign policy, she has emphasized congressional oversight of military actions and supported diplomatic efforts to address international conflicts while also voting for targeted sanctions in specific security contexts.
