Sanford Bishop

Sanford Dixon Bishop Jr. is a Democratic U.S. Representative for Georgia's 2nd congressional district, a position he has held since first being elected in 1992. Born on February 4, 1947, in Mobile, Alabama, Bishop graduated from Morehouse College in 1968 and earned his J.D. from Emory University School of Law in 1971. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971 before beginning a private legal practice in Columbus, Georgia. His political career began in the Georgia House of Representatives, where he served from 1977 to 1990, followed by a term in the Georgia State Senate from 1991 to 1992. In Congress, Bishop is recognized as a senior member of the House Committee on Appropriations and serves as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies. He is a prominent member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of fiscally conservative to moderate Democrats. Throughout his tenure, he has focused heavily on the needs of his primarily rural and agricultural district, advocating for military families, veterans, and the regional peanut industry. He is also a co-founder of the Congressional Military Family Caucus.
