Vern Buchanan

Vern Buchanan is a Republican politician and businessman serving as the U.S. Representative for Florida's 16th congressional district, a position he has held since 2013; he previously represented the 13th district from 2007 to 2013. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Buchanan served six years in the Michigan Air National Guard from 1969 to 1975. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Cleary University in 1975 and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Detroit in 1986. Before entering public office, he spent over 30 years in the private sector, notably in the printing and automotive industries, and served as the chairman of both the Florida Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce. First elected to Congress in 2006, Buchanan has become a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, where he currently serves as Vice Chair and Chairman of the Health Subcommittee. His legislative work frequently focuses on tax policy, international trade, and healthcare reform. He has been recognized by non-partisan organizations, such as the Lugar Center, for his record of bipartisanship and effectiveness in lawmaking. During his tenure, he has seen over 50 of his legislative initiatives signed into law, addressing issues ranging from military training reforms and veterans' benefits to combating animal cruelty. In early 2026, Buchanan announced that he would not seek re-election for his seat in the 2026 cycle, concluding a career that spans two decades in the House of Representatives. Throughout his time in office, he has been a prominent figure in the Florida congressional delegation, often serving as its Republican co-chair. His accomplishments also include securing funding for the Sarasota National Cemetery and playing a key role in the passage of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA).
