André Carson

André Carson is the U.S. Representative for Indiana's 7th congressional district, a position he has held since 2008. A member of the Democratic Party, Carson was first elected in a special election following the death of his grandmother, Representative Julia Carson. Born and raised in Indianapolis, he became the second Muslim elected to the United States Congress. Carson's educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice Management from Concordia University Wisconsin and a Master of Science in Management from Indiana Wesleyan University. Before entering federal politics, he served on the Indianapolis City-County Council and worked extensively in law enforcement. His professional history includes nine years as an officer for the Indiana State Excise Police and a role in the anti-terrorism division of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. In Congress, Carson is a senior member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. He is also active in several caucuses, including the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and has been a proponent of federal investment in local infrastructure projects like Indianapolis's mass transit system.
