Joe Courtney

Joe Courtney is a Democratic politician who has represented Connecticut's 2nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2007. Born and raised in West Hartford, he earned his Bachelor of Arts from Tufts University in 1975 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1978. Before his tenure in Congress, Courtney served as a public defender, a private practice attorney, and the Town Attorney for Vernon, Connecticut. He also served as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1987 to 1994, where he chaired the Public Health and Human Service Committee. In Congress, Courtney has become a prominent leader on defense and naval issues, serving as the Ranking Member and former Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces. His work has focused heavily on the shipbuilding industry in eastern Connecticut, particularly the production of Virginia-class submarines. He has also been recognized for his advocacy on behalf of veterans, including his role in expanding the Montgomery GI Bill and extending TRICARE benefits to dependents. Additionally, he has secured federal designations for local environmental conservation, such as the Eightmile River's inclusion in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.
