Mario Diaz-Balart

Mario Diaz-Balart is a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, currently representing Florida's 26th congressional district. Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, he comes from a prominent political family and attended the University of South Florida, where he studied political science. Before entering federal office, Diaz-Balart served for 14 years in the Florida State Legislature, serving in both the State House and State Senate, where he became the youngest person ever elected to the Florida Senate at age 31. He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2002 and has established himself as a senior member of the House Committee on Appropriations. Throughout his tenure, he has held several leadership roles, including Chairman of the Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs, and currently serves as the Dean of the Florida delegation. Among his key accomplishments, Diaz-Balart co-founded the Everglades Caucus and has secured billions in federal funding for environmental restoration. He has also been instrumental in obtaining federal disaster relief for Florida and has championed significant infrastructure projects. Additionally, he has played a major role in foreign policy, particularly regarding U.S. relations with Latin America and the promotion of democracy in Cuba and Venezuela.

Diaz-Balart has consistently advocated for fiscal responsibility, supporting tax relief measures to stimulate economic growth and eliminate what he describes as unfair taxes. On immigration, he supports comprehensive reform that combines enhanced border security with a pathway for undocumented individuals to earn legal status. He is a prominent advocate for environmental protection, specifically the restoration of the Florida Everglades. In healthcare, while he originally opposed the Affordable Care Act, he has supported extending certain subsidies for his constituents while seeking to address rising premium costs. His foreign policy is marked by strong support for U.S. allies such as Israel and Taiwan, along with a firm stance against authoritarian regimes in the Western Hemisphere.
