Virginia Foxx

Virginia Foxx is a Republican politician who has represented North Carolina's 5th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2005. Born in New York City and raised in the rural Blue Ridge Mountains, Foxx was the first in her family to graduate from high school. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and later received a Doctor of Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Before entering federal office, she held several roles in higher education, including serving as a sociology professor at Appalachian State University and as the president of Mayland Community College from 1987 to 1994. Foxx's political career began with her service on the Watauga County Board of Education and later in the North Carolina Senate, where she served from 1994 until her election to Congress in 2004. In the U.S. House, she has held significant leadership roles, including serving as the Chairwoman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and as the Secretary of the House Republican Conference.
