John Garamendi

John Garamendi is a Democratic U.S. Representative representing California's 8th congressional district, having first been elected to the House in a 2009 special election. Raised on a cattle ranch in Mokelumne Hill, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in business from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Following his education, he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ethiopia from 1966 to 1968, an experience that heavily influenced his focus on international service and diplomacy. Garamendi's extensive public service career began in the California State Assembly in 1974, followed by four terms in the State Senate, where he served as Majority Leader. He held the office of California Insurance Commissioner twice and served as the 46th Lieutenant Governor of California from 2007 until his move to Congress. Additionally, he served as the Deputy Secretary of the Interior under President Bill Clinton from 1995 to 1998, where he managed significant environmental and water policy negotiations.
