Stephen Lynch

Stephen Francis Lynch is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Massachusetts's 8th Congressional District. Born on March 31, 1955, and raised in the public housing projects of South Boston, Lynch began his career as a structural ironworker, following in his father's footsteps. He worked in the trade for 18 years and became the youngest president in the history of the Iron Workers Local 7 at age 30. During his time as an ironworker, he pursued higher education, earning a B.S. in Construction Management from the Wentworth Institute of Technology, a J.D. from Boston College Law School, and later a Master's in Public Administration from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Lynch entered politics in 1994 when he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He later served in the Massachusetts State Senate before winning a special election in 2001 to succeed the late Congressman Joe Moakley in the U.S. House of Representatives. Throughout his tenure, Lynch has focused on labor rights, trade policy, and financial reform. He is a senior member of the House Committee on Financial Services and the Committee on Oversight and Accountability. He is also a co-founder of the Congressional Labor and Working Families Caucus, reflecting his background as a former union leader and his advocacy for working-class families.

Lynch is known as a moderate to liberal Democrat who often focuses on the intersection of labor and economic policy. He is a staunch advocate for labor unions, supporting a higher minimum wage and trade policies that protect American manufacturing jobs. He played a key role in crafting the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act to increase financial transparency. On healthcare, he supports the Affordable Care Act and has advocated for lowering prescription drug costs and expanding veteran health benefits through the PACT Act. Regarding the environment, Lynch views climate change as a national security threat and supports an 'all-of-the-above' energy strategy that transitions toward renewable sources and low-emission public transit. On foreign policy, he has supported U.S. interventions in the Middle East, making numerous trips to Iraq and Afghanistan, and continues to support aid for Ukraine and Israel. Regarding immigration, Lynch has expressed that Congress must 'get control of the border' to address the strain on the immigration system and local resources, while generally supporting federal bipartisan solutions over unilateral enforcement measures.
