Christopher Murphy

Christopher Scott Murphy is the junior United States Senator from Connecticut, a member of the Democratic Party who has served in the chamber since 2013. He previously represented Connecticut's 5th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2007 to 2013, having first been elected to Congress in 2006. Murphy began his political career in the Connecticut General Assembly, serving in the state's House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003 and the State Senate from 2003 to 2007. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science from Williams College and a Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut School of Law. In the Senate, Murphy has established himself as a prominent advocate for gun violence prevention, a focus that intensified following the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. He was a primary negotiator for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022, the first major federal gun safety legislation in nearly thirty years. His legislative work also includes significant contributions to mental health reform, such as the bipartisan Mental Health Reform Act of 2016, and efforts to bolster domestic manufacturing through "Buy American" initiatives. He currently serves on the Senate Committees on Appropriations; Foreign Relations; and Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.

Senator Murphy supports expanding healthcare access through the "Choose Medicare Act," which would create a public option for insurance, and he has consistently defended the Affordable Care Act. On gun policy, he advocates for universal background checks, red flag laws, and bans on certain types of firearms. His foreign policy views emphasize a "diplomacy-first" approach, focusing on human rights and international alliances while seeking to limit U.S. military entanglements abroad. Murphy also supports environmental protections to address climate change, investments in green energy, and economic policies that strengthen labor unions and domestic manufacturing.
