Austin Scott

James Austin Scott is a Republican politician who has represented Georgia's 8th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2011. Born in Augusta, Georgia, Scott attended the University of Georgia, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in risk management and insurance in 1993. Before entering federal politics, he served in the Georgia House of Representatives for 14 years, from 1997 to 2011, and operated an independent insurance brokerage firm for approximately two decades. Scott was first elected to Congress in 2010, defeating the Democratic incumbent during a cycle marked by significant Republican gains nationwide. In the House, he has become a senior member of both the Agriculture Committee and the Armed Services Committee. His legislative work often centers on the economic interests of rural Georgia, including federal farm policy and the maintenance of military installations such as Robins Air Force Base. In October 2023, he briefly sought the Republican nomination for Speaker of the House during the leadership transition following the removal of Kevin McCarthy.
