Adrian Smith

Adrian Smith was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and raised in Gering. He attended Liberty University before transferring to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993. Before entering public office, Smith worked as a real estate agent and an educator. His political career began in 1994 when he was elected to the Gering City Council, where he served until 1998. He then represented District 48 in the Nebraska Legislature from 1999 to 2007, focusing on tax and education issues. In 2006, Smith was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to represent Nebraska's 3rd Congressional District as a member of the Republican Party. He is currently the dean of Nebraska's congressional delegation. Throughout his tenure, he has become a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees tax, trade, and healthcare policy. Smith has held leadership roles within the committee, including serving as the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Trade, where he works on international market access for agricultural products and manufacturers. Smith's legislative work is heavily centered on the needs of his largely rural district, which includes 80 of Nebraska's 93 counties. He is a co-founder and chair of several caucuses, such as the Congressional Biofuels Caucus and the Modern Agriculture Caucus. His key accomplishments include his involvement in crafting the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and advocating for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). He continues to prioritize policies that support the agricultural economy and rural infrastructure.

Representative Smith advocates for a conservative fiscal and social agenda. On the economy, he supports lowering tax burdens and reducing federal spending, having helped craft the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. He is a proponent of expanding international trade markets for Nebraska's agricultural goods and supports the year-round sale of E-15 biofuels. In healthcare, Smith has consistently voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), favoring private-market solutions and focusing on improving rural healthcare access and expanding telehealth services. Regarding immigration, he supports increased border security, including the construction of a southern border wall, and favors stricter enforcement of existing immigration laws. He holds a pro-life position, opposing taxpayer funding for abortion, and is a supporter of the Second Amendment.
