Christopher Smith

Christopher Henry Smith is a long-serving Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing New Jersey's 4th congressional district. Born in Rahway, New Jersey, Smith graduated from Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey) in 1975 with a degree in business administration. Before entering public office, he worked in his family’s sporting goods business and served as the executive director of the New Jersey Right to Life Committee. Smith was first elected to Congress in 1980 and has served continuously since 1981, making him the dean of New Jersey's congressional delegation. Throughout his tenure, he has held various leadership roles, including serving as the chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs and as a leader on the Congressional-Executive Commission on China and the Helsinki Commission. His legislative career is characterized by a focus on international human rights, global health, and veterans' issues. He is the primary author of several landmark pieces of legislation, most notably the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000, which created the federal infrastructure to combat human trafficking. Smith has also sponsored numerous laws focused on healthcare research, including the Autism CARES Act and the Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act, which supports umbilical cord blood and bone marrow research. He is a prominent leader of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus and has consistently advocated for legislation restricting abortion.

Representative Smith’s policy positions are defined by a strong emphasis on human rights and social conservatism. He is staunchly pro-life, opposing federal funding for abortion and supporting the defunding of organizations that provide abortion services. In foreign policy, he is a leading critic of China’s human rights record, particularly regarding religious freedom and forced labor, and has historically opposed normalizing trade relations with Beijing.
