Thomas Massie

Thomas Massie is the U.S. Representative for Kentucky's 4th congressional district, having served as a member of the Republican Party since his first election in November 2012. He initially entered Congress following a special election to succeed Geoff Davis and was subsequently re-elected to several terms. Before his tenure in federal office, Massie served as the Judge-Executive of Lewis County, Kentucky, from 2011 to 2012. Within the House, he has been a prominent member of the House Judiciary Committee and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Massie’s professional background is in engineering and technology. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering. While a student, he developed haptic technology that allows users to interact with computers through the sense of touch, leading him to co-found SensAble Technologies. He holds approximately 29 patents related to his work in haptics and virtual touch. After selling his company, he returned to Kentucky to live on a sustainable, off-grid timber farm. Often described as a libertarian-leaning Republican, Massie is known for his frequent opposition to party leadership on fiscal and civil liberties issues. His legislative approach is largely defined by a strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution, which has earned him the nickname "Mr. No" for his record of voting against large spending bills and bipartisan legislation. In May 2026, Massie lost his bid for renomination in the Republican primary for his congressional seat.
