Mark Takano

Mark Allan Takano is a Democratic politician who has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2013. Born in Riverside, California, his family’s history includes the internment of his parents and grandparents during World War II. Takano graduated as valedictorian from La Sierra High School before attending Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in government in 1983. He later obtained a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from the University of California, Riverside, in 2010. Prior to his congressional career, Takano worked as a public high school teacher for over 20 years and served as a member of the Riverside Community College District Board of Trustees from 1990 to 2012. First elected to Congress in 2012 to represent California's 41st District, Takano became the first openly gay person of Asian descent to serve in the House. Following redistricting, he began representing California's 39th District in 2023. Throughout his tenure, he has been a prominent member of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, serving as both Chairman and Ranking Member. He also serves on the Committee on Education and the Workforce and is a co-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus. One of Takano’s most significant legislative accomplishments is authoring the Honoring our PACT Act of 2022, a bipartisan law that significantly expanded healthcare and benefits for veterans exposed to toxic substances like burn pits. His work frequently focuses on the intersection of education, labor rights, and veterans' welfare. He has consistently advocated for policies aimed at strengthening the middle class, protecting social safety nets, and advancing civil rights for the LGBTQ+ community.

Mark Takano holds progressive positions across a wide range of policy areas. In healthcare, he is a staunch advocate for 'Medicare for All' and has consistently supported protecting and expanding Medicare and Medicaid while working to lower prescription drug costs. On immigration, he supports comprehensive reform, including a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and protections for 'Dreamers' through the American Dream and Promise Act; he also champions the Veteran Service Recognition Act to prevent the deportation of non-citizen veterans. Regarding the environment, he advocates for clean energy initiatives and climate action to reduce carbon emissions. His economic platform focuses on strengthening labor unions, increasing the minimum wage, and investing in vocational training and public education. As a leader on veterans' issues, he prioritizes mental health resources, education benefits, and healthcare access for former service members.
