Juan Vargas

Juan Vargas is a Democratic U.S. Representative representing California's 52nd Congressional District. Born on March 7, 1961, in National City, California, he was the third of ten children raised on a chicken ranch by parents who immigrated from Mexico under the Bracero Program. Vargas earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of San Diego in 1983, an M.A. in Humanities from Fordham University in 1987, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1991, where he was a classmate of former President Barack Obama. Before entering politics, he spent several years with the Jesuit religious order, serving in an orphanage in El Salvador during its civil war, and later practiced law in San Diego. His career in public service began on the San Diego City Council, where he served from 1993 to 2000. He later served in the California State Assembly (2000–2006) and the California State Senate (2010–2012). Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and assumed office in January 2013. Throughout his tenure, he has served on the House Committee on Financial Services and has been a prominent member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Representative Vargas advocates for comprehensive immigration reform, including pathways to citizenship for Dreamers and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, while addressing the root causes of migration. In healthcare, he is a firm supporter of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and focuses on expanding access to affordable care, lowering prescription drug costs, and protecting reproductive rights. Regarding the environment, he champions climate action and clean energy, with a specific focus on addressing sewage pollution in the Tijuana River Valley. His economic platform emphasizes job creation through infrastructure investment, support for small businesses, and strengthening labor rights and collective bargaining. In foreign policy, he supports international humanitarian assistance and funding for refugee programs to maintain national security and global stability.
