Elizabeth Warren

Elizabeth Warren is a Democratic politician serving as the senior U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, a seat she has held since January 2013. Born Elizabeth Ann Herring in Oklahoma City, she grew up in a working-class family and attended George Washington University on a debate scholarship before earning a Bachelor of Science from the University of Houston in 1970 and a Juris Doctor from Rutgers Law School in 1976. Before her career in public office, Warren was a distinguished law professor specializing in bankruptcy and commercial law, teaching at several institutions including the University of Texas, the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard Law School, where she was a tenured professor for nearly two decades. Warren's transition into national public service was defined by her work in consumer protection and economic oversight. Following the 2008 financial crisis, she chaired the Congressional Oversight Panel for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and was instrumental in the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), serving as a special advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury to oversee its establishment. In 2012, she defeated incumbent Republican Scott Brown to become the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts. She has since been re-elected twice, in 2018 and 2024, and maintains a leadership role within the Senate as a Vice Chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus.

Warren's policy platform is centered on economic reform and the expansion of the social safety net. She is a leading advocate for "Medicare for All," proposing a transition to a single-payer healthcare system to ensure universal coverage and lower prescription drug costs.
