Angus King

Angus Stanley King Jr. was born on March 31, 1944, in Alexandria, Virginia. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College in 1966 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1969. King began his legal career as a staff attorney for Pine Tree Legal Assistance in Maine and later served as chief counsel to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Narcotics. Before entering elective office, he was a television host for Maine public broadcasting and a successful entrepreneur, founding Northeast Energy Management, Inc., a company focused on energy conservation projects. King served as the 72nd Governor of Maine from 1995 to 2003. As an independent governor, he was known for centrist policies and signature initiatives such as the Maine Learning Technology Initiative, which provided laptop computers to all middle school students in the state. He also oversaw significant expansions in land conservation and mental health services. After two terms as governor, he returned to the private sector and taught at Bowdoin and Bates Colleges before running for federal office. In 2012, King was elected to the U.S. Senate as an independent, succeeding retiring Republican Senator Olympia Snowe. He was re-elected in 2018 and again in 2024. Although he maintains his status as an independent, King caucuses with the Democratic Party for committee assignment purposes. In the Senate, he serves on the Committees on Armed Services, Intelligence, Energy and Natural Resources, and Veterans' Affairs, where he is recognized for his focus on cybersecurity, national security, and bipartisan cooperation.

Senator King identifies as a pragmatic centrist, often emphasizing bipartisan solutions and fiscal responsibility. On healthcare, he is a staunch supporter of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), citing his own survival of early-stage melanoma as a reason for ensuring all Americans have access to insurance; he advocates for lowering prescription drug costs and improving rural healthcare delivery. Regarding the economy, King supports small business growth, investments in infrastructure, and workforce development, while frequently raising concerns about the long-term impacts of the federal deficit. On environmental issues, he is a proponent of transitioning to clean energy and has been a leading voice in addressing climate change through domestic innovation and land conservation efforts. His foreign policy views center on strong national security through deterrence and international alliances; however, he has recently expressed concern regarding civilian casualties in international conflicts, notably voting in late 2024 to block certain arms sales to Israel. On social issues, he generally supports abortion access, LGBTQ+ rights, and common-sense gun safety measures such as universal background checks and 'red flag' laws.
