Deb Fischer

Debra Strobel Fischer is a Republican politician who has served as the senior United States Senator from Nebraska since 2013. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, she attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education. Before entering federal politics, Fischer was a rancher in the Nebraska Sandhills, co-owning and operating a family cattle ranch near Valentine. She began her public service on the Valentine Rural High School Board of Education, where she served from 1990 to 2004, and also served as a commissioner on the Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Post-Secondary Education. Fischer served two terms in the Nebraska Unicameral from 2005 to 2013, representing the 43rd District and chairing the Transportation and Telecommunications Committee. In 2012, she was elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first Nebraska woman elected to a full term in the body. Since taking office, she has focused extensively on rural infrastructure, agricultural policy, and national security. She currently serves on several key committees, including the Armed Services, Appropriations, and Agriculture Committees, and she was re-elected to her seat in 2018 and 2024.

Senator Fischer identifies as a fiscal conservative, advocating for reduced federal spending, a balanced budget amendment, and the permanence of the 2017 tax cuts. On healthcare, she has consistently voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, favoring private-market competition and tort reform. Fischer is a strong proponent of the Second Amendment and opposes federal bans on assault weapons. Regarding immigration, she emphasizes border security, the detention of undocumented immigrants who commit crimes, and stricter asylum standards. She also advocates for a strong military, particularly the modernization of the U.S. nuclear triad, and supports an 'all-of-the-above' energy strategy that emphasizes Nebraska's biofuel production. On social issues, she has maintained a pro-life stance and has previously expressed opposition to same-sex marriage.
