Katherine Clark

Katherine Clark is a Democratic politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Massachusetts's 5th congressional district. She was first elected to the House in a special election held in December 2013 to succeed Ed Markey. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Clark received a Bachelor of Arts from St. Lawrence University, a Juris Doctor from Cornell Law School, and a Master in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School. Her professional background includes service as an attorney in Chicago and Colorado, a clerk for the U.S. District Court in Colorado, and as general counsel for the Massachusetts Office of Child Care Services. Clark's career in elected office began at the local level on the Melrose School Committee before she was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 2008 and the Massachusetts Senate in 2011. Since entering Congress, she has risen through the Democratic leadership ranks, serving as the Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus and then as Assistant Speaker of the House during the 117th Congress. Currently, she serves as the House Minority Whip in the 118th Congress, making her one of the highest-ranking women in the history of the U.S. House of Representatives. Throughout her tenure, she has focused on legislation related to childcare affordability, women's rights, and addressing the opioid crisis.
