Bruce Westerman

Bruce Westerman is a Republican politician who has represented Arkansas's 4th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2015. Born and raised in Hot Springs, Arkansas, he attended the University of Arkansas, where he played football for the Razorbacks and earned a Bachelor of Science in biological and agricultural engineering in 1990. He later obtained a Master of Forestry from Yale University in 2001. Before entering politics, Westerman spent over two decades working as a professional engineer and forester, primarily with Mid-South Engineering Company. Westerman's political career began with service on the Fountain Lake School Board from 2006 to 2010. He was then elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives, where he served from 2011 to 2015. During his tenure in the state legislature, he became the first Republican House Majority Leader in Arkansas since Reconstruction. He was first elected to the U.S. Congress in 2014, succeeding Tom Cotton. In the House, he has risen to serve as the Chairman of the Committee on Natural Resources, utilizing his professional background to influence national forestry and environmental policies.

Westerman's policy positions reflect a conservative platform focused on fiscal responsibility, regulatory reform, and natural resource management. On healthcare, he has advocated for repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act, introducing the 'Fair Care Act' which aims to lower costs and increase coverage through private market competition while maintaining protections for pre-existing conditions. Economically, he supports lower taxes, reduced federal spending, and the roll-back of federal regulations to stimulate job growth, having supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. As the only professional forester in Congress, his environmental platform emphasizes 'science-based' forest management as a primary tool for stewardship. He has introduced major legislation such as the Resilient Federal Forests Act and the Trillion Trees Act to address wildfire risks and carbon sequestration. Regarding immigration, Westerman supports strengthening border security, including the construction of a border wall and maintaining Title 42. In foreign policy, he generally aligns with a 'peace through strength' approach, frequently criticizing the Biden administration's handling of international withdrawals and supporting measures to increase transparency in foreign aid.
