Trent Kelly

John Trent Kelly is a Republican politician and retired Major General who has represented Mississippi's 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2015. Born in Union, Mississippi, Kelly earned his associate’s degree from East Central Community College and both his bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of Mississippi. He furthered his education by obtaining a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College in 2010. Kelly's military career spanned nearly 40 years in the Mississippi Army National Guard, during which he served in Operation Desert Storm and the Iraq War, eventually rising to the rank of Major General before retiring in 2025. Before his tenure in Congress, Kelly maintained a private law practice and served as a city prosecutor in Tupelo from 1999 to 2011. He was later elected as the District Attorney for Mississippi’s 1st Judicial District, serving from 2012 until 2015. Kelly entered federal politics by winning a special election in June 2015 to fill the seat left vacant by the late Representative Alan Nunnelee. Since then, he has been re-elected to several succeeding terms, establishing himself as a key member of the House Armed Services, Agriculture, and Intelligence committees. In his congressional career, Kelly has held leadership roles such as the Chairman of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee. He has received numerous military awards, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Action Badge. Throughout his time in office, he has prioritized issues relevant to his largely rural district, such as agricultural policy and national defense, while maintaining a consistent voting record aligned with Republican platforms.

Trent Kelly advocates for a limited federal government and emphasizes individual choice in healthcare, supporting reforms aimed at lowering drug prices and insurance premiums while ensuring the long-term solvency of Social Security and Medicare. On economic policy, he supports deregulation, permanent tax cuts, and work requirements for welfare recipients to stimulate job growth. He is a proponent of an 'all-of-the-above' energy strategy that includes the continued development of oil and natural gas alongside newer technologies. Kelly is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and has consistently opposed measures to restrict gun ownership. Regarding immigration, he has supported increased funding for border security and wall construction. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, he frequently advocates for policies that support Mississippi's farming industry, including conservative reforms to the Farm Bill.
