Lisa Blunt Rochester

Lisa Blunt Rochester is a Democratic U.S. Senator from Delaware, having taken office in January 2025. She previously served as the U.S. Representative for Delaware's at-large congressional district from 2017 to 2025. Upon her initial election to the House of Representatives in 2016, she became the first woman and the first African American to represent Delaware in Congress. Her political career began as an intern and caseworker for then-Congressman Tom Carper, and she later served in the cabinets of two Delaware governors as the Secretary of Labor, Deputy Secretary of Health and Social Services, and State Personnel Director. Blunt Rochester graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a bachelor's degree in international relations in 1985 and later earned a master's degree in urban affairs and public policy from the University of Delaware in 2003. Before her tenure in Congress, she served as the CEO of the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League and as a senior fellow at the University of Massachusetts Boston. She was also a co-chair of Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign and a member of the vetting committee for his vice-presidential selection. During her time in the House, Blunt Rochester founded and co-chaired the bipartisan Congressional Future of Work Caucus, focusing on workforce development and the impacts of automation. She has been a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and has served on committees including Energy and Commerce, and Agriculture. In the Senate, her assignments include the committees on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions; Environment and Public Works; and Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

Lisa Blunt Rochester maintains a reliably Democratic voting record and focuses on economic opportunity, healthcare access, and environmental justice. She supports the expansion of the Affordable Care Act and has championed legislation to lower prescription drug costs for seniors. On economic policy, she emphasizes workforce training, bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S., and building a 'middle-out' economy. She is a vocal advocate for reproductive rights and has supported federal protections for abortion access. Regarding the environment, she has pushed for climate resilience and clean water initiatives, including support for the Inflation Reduction Act and the Strengthening Coastal Communities Act. Her positions on immigration include support for comprehensive reform that balances border security with legal pathways to citizenship, often emphasizing humane enforcement and community support. She is also a strong proponent of voting rights legislation, such as the Voting Rights Advancement Act.
