John Rutherford

John Henry Rutherford is a Republican politician and former law enforcement officer currently representing Florida's 5th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1952, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, in his youth and eventually earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminology from Florida State University in 1974. His education also includes an associate degree from Florida State College at Jacksonville and graduation from the FBI National Academy. Rutherford's professional career spans over four decades in law enforcement, beginning as a patrolman with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office in 1974. He eventually rose through the ranks to serve three terms as the elected Sheriff of Duval County from 2003 to 2015, during which he was credited with reducing violent crime rates and implementing intelligence-led policing strategies. Rutherford was first elected to Congress in 2016, initially representing Florida's 4th district before redistricting moved him to the 5th district in 2023. In the House, he is a member of the Appropriations Committee, serving on subcommittees focused on Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs, as well as the House Ethics Committee.
