Darren Soto

Darren Michael Soto was born on February 25, 1978, in Ringwood, New Jersey. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Rutgers University in 2000 and a Juris Doctor from the George Washington University Law School in 2004. After moving to Florida, he practiced law in Central Florida, specializing in civil litigation and property law, before entering public service. Soto began his legislative career in the Florida House of Representatives, where he served from 2007 to 2012, followed by a term in the Florida Senate from 2012 to 2016. In 2016, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Florida’s 9th congressional district as a member of the Democratic Party, succeeding Alan Grayson. He made history as the first person of Puerto Rican descent from Florida to serve in Congress. Since taking office, he has served on key committees, including the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the House Committee on Natural Resources, and the House Committee on Agriculture. Throughout his tenure, Soto has focused on issues such as environmental protection, healthcare accessibility, and the diversification of Central Florida's economy through investments in high-tech manufacturing and infrastructure. He has been a vocal advocate for the Puerto Rican community, particularly in the wake of Hurricane Maria, and co-chairs the Congressional Blockchain Caucus, reflecting his interest in emerging technology policy.

Darren Soto advocates for economic policies including raising the federal minimum wage to $15 and fostering high-tech job growth in sectors such as biotechnology and aerospace. In healthcare, he supports the Affordable Care Act, protecting Medicare and Social Security, and lowering the cost of prescription drugs. Soto is a prominent supporter of Puerto Rican statehood and has consistently advocated for federal disaster recovery funding for the island. His environmental priorities include addressing climate change through renewable energy investment and the conservation of Florida’s natural resources, such as the Everglades. On immigration, he supports comprehensive reform with a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers and DACA recipients. Additionally, he favors gun safety legislation, reproductive rights, and LGBTQ+ equality.
