Raja Krishnamoorthi

Raja Krishnamoorthi is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Illinois's 8th congressional district since 2017. Born in New Delhi, India, and raised in Peoria, Illinois, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Princeton University and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. His career prior to Congress includes serving as a law clerk for a federal judge, a policy advisor for Barack Obama’s 2004 Senate campaign, and the Deputy Treasurer of Illinois, where he managed the state's technology venture capital fund. He also served as a special assistant attorney general in Illinois and as a member of the Illinois Housing Development Authority. Before entering public office, Krishnamoorthi was a businessman in the technology sector, serving as president of companies focused on national security and renewable energy. Since being elected to Congress, he has held significant leadership roles, including serving as the Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party. He is also a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the Committee on Oversight and Accountability. His work in Congress has often focused on issues of ethics, transparency, and the economic impacts of technology.

Krishnamoorthi advocates for policies aimed at strengthening the middle class, including investments in career and technical education (CTE) and high-tech manufacturing. He supports the Affordable Care Act and universal healthcare coverage while opposing cuts to Social Security and Medicare. On immigration, he supports a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients and has introduced legislation such as the HIRE Act to increase the cap on H-1B visas for high-skilled workers. His foreign policy stance is characterized by his leadership on the China Select Committee, where he focuses on U.S. economic competitiveness and national security relative to the Chinese government. Additionally, he supports environmental protections, advocating for clean energy initiatives and defending the regulatory authority of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
