Mike Johnson

Mike Johnson is a Republican politician and attorney serving as the U.S. Representative for Louisiana's 4th congressional district. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, he earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Louisiana State University in 1995, followed by a Juris Doctor from LSU’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1998. Before entering public office, Johnson spent nearly 20 years practicing constitutional law, including work with the Alliance Defending Freedom and founding the nonprofit Freedom Guard. He also served as an online adjunct professor at Liberty University’s Helms School of Government. Johnson’s political career began with his election to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 2015. He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016 and assumed office on January 3, 2017. During his tenure, he has held several leadership roles, including serving as the chairman of the Republican Study Committee from 2019 to 2021 and as Vice Chairman of the House Republican Conference from 2021 to 2023. On October 25, 2023, he was elected the 56th Speaker of the House following the ouster of Kevin McCarthy, and he was re-elected to the speakership in January 2025 after Republicans maintained control of the House. Throughout his time in Congress, Johnson has been a member of the House Judiciary Committee and the House Armed Services Committee. He is known for his focus on constitutional law and conservative principles. His rise to the speakership was notable for being one of the fastest in modern U.S. history, occurring after less than seven years of service in the House. He represents 20 parishes across northwestern and western Louisiana, focusing on legislative priorities that align with his legal and religious background.
