Jack Bergman

John Warren "Jack" Bergman is a Republican politician and retired United States Marine Corps lieutenant general who has represented Michigan's 1st congressional district since 2017. Born in Shakopee, Minnesota, on February 2, 1947, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in business from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1969 and later received an MBA from the University of West Florida. His 40-year military career included service as a naval aviator during the Vietnam War and culminated in his role as the commanding general of the Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North. Upon his election to the House of Representatives, he became the highest-ranking military officer to ever serve in the U.S. Congress. Outside of his military service, Bergman worked as a pilot for Northwest Airlines for 22 years and founded a medical technology company. He was first elected to Congress in November 2016, representing a district that encompasses Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the northern portion of the Lower Peninsula. During his tenure, he has served on the House Committee on Armed Services, the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, and the House Budget Committee. He is also a member of the Republican Study Committee and the Bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus. His legislative focus often centers on the needs of his rural district, specifically regarding veterans' services, infrastructure development, and economic growth. He has emphasized his background as a non-career politician, often citing his military and business experience as the foundation for his approach to governance.

Jack Bergman is a fiscal conservative who supports a balanced budget amendment and has advocated for making permanent the individual tax cuts from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. On healthcare, he is a member of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus and supports legislation to prohibit federal funding for abortion, while also championing the expansion of rural broadband to improve telehealth access. His immigration policy focuses on enhancing border security, including funding for a border wall, and he has co-sponsored measures to penalize sanctuary jurisdictions. While he is a member of the Climate Solutions Caucus, he has also supported legislation to reduce the regulatory scope of the EPA, such as limiting the use of the social cost of carbon in federal rulemaking. As a veteran, a significant portion of his platform involves reform of the Department of Veterans Affairs to improve benefit delivery and healthcare quality for former service members.
