David Kustoff

David Kustoff is a Republican U.S. Representative serving Tennessee's 8th Congressional District, a position he has held since first being elected in 2016 and assuming office in January 2017. A lifelong resident of West Tennessee, he earned his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1989 and his law degree in 1992, both from the University of Memphis. Before entering Congress, Kustoff practiced law in Memphis and served as the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee from 2006 to 2008. During his tenure as U.S. Attorney, he gained national attention for overseeing the prosecution of the "Tennessee Waltz" public corruption trials, which resulted in the conviction of several state officials. Throughout his career, Kustoff has been an active figure in the Republican Party, serving as the chairman of the Shelby County GOP in the late 1990s and later as the Tennessee campaign chairman for George W. Bush’s presidential campaigns in 2000 and 2004. In 2015, he was appointed to the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, where he worked on initiatives to expand access to community college. In the House of Representatives, he serves on the powerful Committee on Ways and Means, where he focuses on tax policy, trade, and healthcare issues affecting his constituents in West Tennessee.

Representative Kustoff identifies as a staunch conservative with a legislative focus on economic growth and national security. On the economy, he advocates for lower taxes and reduced government spending, notably supporting the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and introducing the Small Business Tax Cut Act to provide relief for farmers and independent professionals. Regarding healthcare, he is a vocal opponent of the Affordable Care Act and has voted in favor of its repeal, supporting a move toward market-based alternatives. On immigration, Kustoff emphasizes border security, supporting the construction of a border wall and advocating for policies to end illegal immigration, which he characterizes as a national security threat. His foreign policy positions include a strong commitment to the U.S.-Israel relationship and opposition to the Iran nuclear deal. In the energy sector, he promotes domestic production of oil and natural gas to achieve energy independence and has introduced legislation to secure the American supply chain for critical minerals. Socially, Kustoff is pro-life, stating that life begins at conception, and he has consistently voted against the expansion of federal protections for same-sex marriage and gender identity rights. As a former federal prosecutor, he also remains a strong advocate for law enforcement and tough-on-crime policies.
